I've just been awarded a CAAP (Community Arts Assistance Program) Grant for 2009. This will be my third year in a row. Hooray!

For those of you unfamiliar with CAAP, it's a great way for emerging to mid-career artists in the Chicagoland area to fund their work. Applications are usually due in December for the following year.

Well, I've been quite remiss in keeping up here. If my blog were toenails, they'd be all long and curly, sort of like these.

But I digress. I have some exciting projects coming up, and will be posting information here as I get it. I'm also working on a new series of 3D photo sculptures... more on that later.

Ongoing projects:

I'll be showing a brand-new piece at this year's VersionFest, which runs from April 23-May 2, so stop on by!

I'm moderating and organizing a panel discussion on intellectual freedom in the age of new media at the Columbia College Chicago Library as part of the NEA-sponsored Big Read on Monday, April 13, from 6-8 pm. Panelists will include Chicago Public Radio's Steve Edwards, Loyola University's Al Gini, new media artists Stacia Yeapanis and Jason Salavon, WBMX's DJ Sundance, and many others. This event is free and open to the public, so you have no excuse for not attending.

I'm curating an exhibition called Re:Figure at Columbia College's Glass Curtain Gallery, date TBD, which I'm quite excited about. It will showcase contemporary approaches to figurative representation across diverse media.

Whew, I'm exhausted just writing all that. More to come as I know it.

So, I've been a busy non-blogging bee. Shows, award applications, moving, etc have devoured my time as of late. Here's some new work by way of an apology.

The piece is tentatively titled Derek 1. It's a collaboration with well-known gay BDSM performer Derek da Silva. I found his tattoos fascinating, and so decided to clone them out and re-draw them on a large-scale print. Lovely.

Hey all--if you happen to be in Chicago on December 1, or Miami on December 6-9, check out my work. Details below.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Saturday, December 1, 2007, Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted St., will host a visual arts installation, After, image: a memorial for those lost to HIV/AIDS, by Cole Robertson. This collection of photographs is meant to serve as a memorial, in the most traditional sense—an aesthetically beautiful gesture commemorating the past. The images, donated by the family members of those lost to HIV/AIDS, are re-workings of photographs of those lost to AIDS. They are then digitally manipulated and printed on fine vellum. They hang as a testament, as a loving tribute, and as a call to action.

Cole Robertson, an MFA-photography graduate of Columbia College, has exhibited work internationally and nationally and chose Center on Halsted specifically to host the installation. “As I work on this, I feel some empty places in my life—spots that should be occupied by people . . . people who are gone.”

The event begins with a reception at 4:00pm and is followed by a talk back with the artist and others who contributed images to the exhibit. A donation of $10 is requested.

This project is supported by a Community Arts Assistance Program grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
